Breaking the Ice

  • What is a fond memory you have with your dad (or the person that was the father figure in your life)?

  • What is one thing you are thankful for him?

Today, we want to honor our Dads by showing ways we can say thanks!

Read Deuteronomy 1:29-31, "Then I said to you, "Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the desert. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”"

Main Content

  • Since God is the perfect example of what a father should be, what are some fatherly characteristics you see in God?

  • God loves you and you are a child of God—how does that make you feel?

Read 1 Timothy 5:8, "But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

  • Have you ever thought of providing for your family as a spiritual thing?

  • Why do you think God sees taking care of your family in a spiritual way?

Read Ephesians 6:4, "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."

  • How do we instruct in a way that doesn't exasperate?

  • Why is it important that we're careful about the way we deliver truth?

Read 1 Corinthians 11:1, "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."

  • What kind of example do you set for others to follow?

  • What things do you do that others should follow?

  • What can you do to be a better example for others to follow?

Next Step

Thank God for all fathers who have been godly illustrations, godly examples to follow! If you had this growing up, go thank Dad today! If you didn’t, strive to forgive and learn from their mistakes. Reset the score for generations to follow!

  • If you are able to, thank your dad (or father figure) for:

  • Providing

  • Instructing

  • Being an example

  • Because of what we've learned today, what is one thing I will do differently this week?
