On Edge

Week 1: If God Cared

INTRODUCTION

Anxiety, depression and Behavior problems are all on the rise. In fact, the average high school student today has the same level of anxiety as a psychiatric patient from the 1950s. That’s insane… literally! It seems that we are better at filtering our Instagram posts than filtering our thoughts… & anxiety gets the best of us. Anxiety stems from carrying something we weren’t meant to carry alone. Let’s talk.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1.    ICEBREAKER: What’s the most awkward thing that’s ever happened to you on a first date? How did it make you feel?

2.    Read 1 Peter 5:5-7. We talked about how Peter had FOMO. He wanted to be fully-involved, and the top dog. But in these verses, he has a completely different perspective. What happened that transformed Peter’s perspective? [Leader’s Tip: Jesus set the example by serving and sacrificing] Should this change our perspective as well? Why or why not?

3.    When you read these verses, what connection does Peter make between pride and anxiety? Do you think Peter is fair or unfair by connecting anxiety to pride? Why or why not?

4.    The speaker talked about how our anxiety reminds us that we are not actually in control of our lives. Why do you think our anxiety peaks when we feel out of control?

5.    Do you ever question God’s goodness or how much He loves you because He doesn’t seem to answer your prayers for help?

6.    Read 1 Peter 5:5-7 again. God doesn’t promise an immediate healing from anxiety, but He does promise to lift you up in due time. How do you hold on to your faith knowing that “due time” could mean a long time?

7.    Read Matthew 11:28. What do you need to trust God with today in order to find rest from your anxiety?

NEXT STEP

In your mind, what’s the worst thing that could happen by opening up about your life struggles? What’s the best thing? Let the group know what your next step is to be honest about and trust God with your anxieties. Is it to Pray with Someone? See a counselor? Be more committed to participating in LifeGroup? Begin a Bible Reading plan?
