All of us have a past. We believe that if we could change the past we could change the future. We don’t think about the consequences of change our past. There are things God has allowed us to go through in order to bless other in our future. Struggle of our past have made us stronger. In the movie Back to the Future we see that the past is the past for reason and the changes that we make would only be superficial and probably lead to a series of bad sequels of failure. There is no changing the past but embracing the future to live in such a way to give God the glory.
Jeremiah 29:11-13 - For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
GOAL FOR THIS SESSION
The goal for this session is to discover that life is about circumstances but taking the opportunity to learn from the past and knowing God has a plan that is bigger then our past.
1. We can’t fix our past but we can fix our focus.
If we were capable of going back to change the because we are flawed and broken we would just mess it up because we cant fix things ourselves.
Romans 5:12 - Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned
Psalm 139:16-18 - Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.
If we attempted to go back and fix the flaws in the tapestry that is our life, we would end up with a floor full of thread. The same sinful person of the past is still the same limited sinful person of the future so we would make mistakes. We want to fix things but we can’t fix ourselves. Our motives are tainted and limited. God has a perfect plan for our lives that he has woven for us and our past is valuable to who we are. You can’t go back to the past! You can’t change the past! You can’t live in the past!
2. We must cherish the fact God has a plan and a purpose for each of us individually.
Jerimiah 29:11-13 - For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
We are limited. Your future is determined by the choices you make. If you choose to allow God to guide you he will transform your life. Jesus Changes people. Jesus will never lead you through a change that he will not sustain you through. We must learn to get out of God’s way. Life is not about our circumstances and God is bigger than our situations and is able to provide everything we need for the purpose he has for our lives. We can’t fix our past but we can fix our focus.
3. I must get out of God’s way.
Proverbs 3:5-8 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones.
II Corinthians 9:8 - And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.
Galatians 6:9 - And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
We are only able to fix our focus when in faith we trust God enough with our future. Since he has a purpose for our lives he has a path. Because he has our path we need his direction down that path. Only when we stop trying to dirct our own path and willingly follow his path in his capabilities and not ours can we fix our focus. The promise is we will reap a harvest if we don’t give up and try to take back control again.
We all have regret and scars form the past. Regret we cant change and scar that will not disappear. Some in your group may feel victim to their past but God has promised that he has a future of purpose if we will allow him to change us. Guide your group fix their focus, not on the past but on Jesus.
