Week of 1/24/16 - #Hashtag

SERIES OVERVIEW

We all need change. Whether it’s in discipline, faith, finances or relationships, making changes can often seem impossible. But all change starts with a simple step. In this series, we will talk about what needs to happen in order for us to change and how we can experience the joy that comes with making changes in our lives.

SESSION 4 #Hashtag

SESSION OVERVIEW

Many of us go through life labeled or #hashtaged. Some of those #hashtags, right or wrong were given to us either by others or by ourselves. Most #hashtag are given to us because of some negative action or event as a form of judgment against us. This holds true for those we give ourselves. Some have said that “only God can judge me” and that statement is completely correct. The problem is that we allow those other #hastags to define us and confine us. The truth is that God made us and he bought us, or redeemed us, by allowing Christ to die for our in our place taking on the judgement of our sins. Because he made us and bought us he is the only one that has the right to #hashtag us. His #hastags are not negative but life giving. Because of God and his love for us we are #accepted #beautiful #new.

DISCUSSION

Use the questions provided in each session to facilitate your group’s discussion and application of each topic.

GET GOING

  • One of our churches core values is “Growing People Change”. Is growth possible without change? Why? Why Not?

  • How do #hashtags challenge or hinder our growth?

GET DEEP

Read Psalm 139:14

  • What does scripture tell us about ourselves?

  • How do our #hashtags, from others or placed on ourselves, sometimes make this hard for us to believe this scripture?

Read Ephesian 2:10

  • As a creation in Christ what is our purpose?

  • How do #hashtags sometime distort our purpose?

Read I Corinthians 6:20

  • If God made us. Why did he have to buy us?

  • How did God buy us back and what was the cost?

Key Point 1:  #hashtags can lock you in and Lock God out. God has made you and Bought you so he is the only one who has the right to #hashtag you.

Read Matthew 11:28

  • The #hashtags others place on us are heavy and burdensome. What is Jesus promise to us if we bring those to Him?

  • What do you think Jesus means by rest?

Read Matthew 11:29

  • The yoke that is Jesus speaking of is more than a metaphor. In those times the yoke referred to a particular slant or style of a Rabbi’s teachings. In today society it would be like sitting under a specific pastor and learning from him. Rabbi’s for the most part were legalistic, overbearing and taught about strict obedience to the law. The Rabbi’s generally believed that they were better than others because they were more righteous and knew the law well enough to be a Rabbi. This explains there constant struggle with Jesus hanging out with sinner.

  • With the that in mind what #hashtags do religion place on people sometimes?

  • How important is humility in ministering to others?

  • What difference does the truths Jesus gives free us from the burden and lighten the load from #hashtag?

Key Point 2: Jesus is the difference maker for all of us; if we allow Him.

  • Does freedom from hashtags allow us to be more open to and in relationships with other believers?

  • What does “You can’t do life alone” really mean to our hashtag free life?

Read Ephesians 2:10 Again

  • How does “Saved people Serve People” align with the light teaching of Jesus?

  • Can we serve people while still holding to #hashtags placed on us by ourselves and others?

  • As we serve others, how can we help them find freedom from their #hashtags?

  • How is being part of a Life Group and Serving faithfully critical to the vision and purpose of the church?

Key Point 3: CHRIST Died for the Church & He wants us to EMBRACE and Wrap our Arms around the Church and the Vision for this year.

Read I Corinthians 5:17

  • How does this verse destroy the #hashtags placed on us by ourselves and others?

  • What new #hashtags does God now give us?

Key Point 4 If You ARE NOT a Believer, the #hashtags #accepted #beautiful #new can be true for you before the day is over if you will open your Life to receive Christ today.

NEXT STEPS

Help your Group identify and take their next steps with Jesus. Pray with them and for them. Ask them about their next steps later this week.

Are you a 100% sure there you will spend eternity?

Today may be the day you need to take your first step away from negative #hashtags by giving your heart to Jesus. He want you to know that in him you are and can be #accepted #beautifuland #new if you will place your trust in Him and receive Him as your Savior.

Do you struggle with what others think about you or have told you that you are by their #hashtags?  Your Next Step is to laydown those heavy and burdensome #hashtags and embrace the truth of who you are in Christ. #accepted #beautiful and #new.

PRAY

Pray for you group, that God will relieve to them what he really thinks of them. Pray that they will be free from the burden of negative #hashtags and walk in the new life God has given them.
