Session 1 Sabotage
The Upside Down
This weekend we kicked off the brand new series called “Sabotage”. Life is made up of relationships. A life of satisfaction, happiness and peace comes by developing and maintaining healthy relationships. Unfortunately, we all have patterns and behaviors that can harm or sabotage our relationships. Over the next 6 week we will discover and explore these behaviors and how we can overcome them with simple biblical truths.
Breaking the Ice
- How many have you have watched the series Stranger Things?
- What is so ominous about the Upside Down World?
Read Genesis 2:18
The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
- How do people today tend to isolate themselves in today’s world?
Pastor explained that aloneness doesn’t refer to being single, but rather having no sense of connection.
- How are we created for relationship?
God is a relational God. He created us to have a relationship with Him. Because we are created in His image we are created as relational beings
- What would our lives look like if we truly understood God’s love?
Read Proverbs 29:23 NLT
Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.
Read Proverbs 16:18 NLT
Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.
The problem with every relationship is not that some of us are unhealthy but that all of us are unholy.
- How does pride drive the Me First mentality?
Read Ephesians 5:15-20
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
- How does living wisely for the enjoyment of God and with God affect the way we communicate in our relationships?
- How does this produce a grateful attitude?
- What do you think of when you hear the word submit?
Submission is not allowing people to walk over us in unhealthy ways. Likewise, submission is not relegated to a particular group but rather it is universal and applies to everybody.
- According to the message today how is submitting to others adjust your priorities from the Me First mentality?
Relationships we desire will happen not when we get what we want but when we give what we have.
Read Philippians 2:3-8
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
- What were some of Jesus teachings that were discussed in the message prove we are in an upside Down world?
Jesus would say things like …
the first are going to be the last
The servant is actually going to be the greatest.
And if you're willing to lose your life, or if you're willing to let go of your need to have everything, you will actually find life.
If you go through life trying to hold on to your life you're going to lose it.
Love give, submits and doesn’t focus on one’s own needs but on the needs of others.
How many of your relationships can be characterized by this statement? If not many your Next Step maybe that you need to evaluate how wisely you are living. Are you living for the surrender to God for God the enjoyment of God? Maybe it’s time to change your mentality and make him first instead of me first.
Are you serving others. If not your Next Step is to become part of the Dream Team. Saved People Serve People bring fulfillment that you can seeking to have your own needs met.
